Minnesota — A sweeping two-day manhunt across Minnesota ended Sunday evening when 57-year-old Vance Luther Boelter, suspected in a politically motivated killing spree, was arrested in a rural area of Sibley County. Boelter is accused of killing former state House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, and critically wounding State Senator John Hoffman and his wife in separate early-morning attacks on June 14.

Officials say Boelter disguised himself as a police officer—adorned with a latex mask and badge—and managed to gain entry to the lawmakers’ homes. The shooting in Champlin targeted the Hoffmans at about 2 am, followed by the fatal attack at the Hortman residence in Brooklyn Park roughly ninety minutes later. Police arriving at the second scene witnessed Boelter shooting Mark Hortman through an open door before a brief gun exchange ensued, allowing the suspect to flee on foot.

With one of Minnesota’s largest manhunts underway—including more than a hundred law enforcement officers and multiple SWAT teams—Boelter’s vehicle was found abandoned along Highway 25 near Belle Plaine. Inside, investigators discovered a notebook listing around 70 names: Democratic lawmakers, abortion providers, and vocal pro-choice advocates.

Friends described Boelter as a deeply religious, politically conservative individual with a background in private security and roles in evangelical ministries. Despite earlier claims of security credentials and overseas experience, records suggest no actual law enforcement training. Witnesses say he once sent a foreboding text to a roommate: “I love you guys … I may be dead shortly.”

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz referred to the shootings as a “politically motivated assassination,” underscoring the severity of an attack on public officials in their homes. The political response has been swift and unanimous, with bipartisan condemnation and a renewed call for reducing violent rhetoric.

The shooting prompted swift action from law enforcement: roadblocks, shelter-in-place warnings, and public alerts cautioning residents not to trust lone individuals claiming to be police. The FBI joined the search, offering a $50,000 reward for tips—reactions reflecting the gravity and potential national implications of the event.

Boelter faces charges of two counts of second-degree murder and two counts of attempted second-degree murder. He is held without bail. The Hoffmans are now hospitalized in stable condition following surgery.

As law enforcement combs through evidence—including firearms, a "No Kings" manifesto, and anti-abortion writings—security protocols for elected officials have tightened. Lawmakers, including Senators Amy Klobuchar and Tina Smith, have increased their security, while protests planned around the state were canceled amid safety concerns.

The shootings mark one of the most serious episodes of political violence in recent U.S. history. As investigations continue, public officials warn this case should serve as a wake-up call—highlighting deepening divisions, threats to civic leaders, and the need for protecting political expression free from violence.
