Trump Orders Alcatraz Prison to Reopen and Expand

Post by : Layla Badr

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a big decision: he wants to reopen and expand Alcatraz Prison. This prison, once known as one of the toughest in the country, was closed in 1963 and is now a popular tourist spot in San Francisco. But now, Trump wants to turn it back into a working prison for the most dangerous and violent criminals in the United States.

In a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump wrote,"Today I am directing the Bureau of Prisons, together with the Department of Justice, FBI, and Homeland Security, to reopen a substantially enlarged and rebuilt ALCATRAZ."

What Is Alcatraz Prison?

Alcatraz Prison is located on an island in San Francisco Bay, California. It's about 1.25 miles from the city shore. Long ago, the island was used as a fort by the U.S. Army. In 1912, it became a military prison. Then, in 1934, it became a high-security federal prison used to hold the country’s most dangerous criminals.

The prison building was made of three floors. It had four cell blocks where prisoners were kept. There were also other rooms like the warden’s office, a visiting area, a library, and a barber shop. The most dangerous prisoners were kept in D-Block, and the worst cells were at the end of it—those were called “The Hole.”

The corridors inside the prison were named after famous U.S. streets like Broadway and Michigan Avenue. When the prison was rebuilt in 1934, old materials were reused. Iron stairs, steel doors, and granite blocks were taken from old buildings and used again. They even used old prison bars to make the walls stronger. But over time, salty sea air caused a lot of damage to the buildings.

Famous Criminals at Alcatraz

Alcatraz was known as the last stop for criminals who were too dangerous for other prisons. Some well-known prisoners were:

  • Al Capone (also called “Scarface”), who was involved in illegal alcohol sales during Prohibition.

  • George "Machine Gun" Kelly, who took part in kidnapping and other crimes.

  • Robert Franklin Stroud, called the “Birdman of Alcatraz,” who killed a prison guard after being jailed for manslaughter.

  • Alvin “Creepy” Karpis, Arthur “Doc” Barker, Henri Young, and Bumpy Johnson were also kept here.

Because of high costs and poor building conditions, the prison was shut down in 1963. In 1972, the U.S. government gave the island to the National Park Service. It was turned into a museum and became part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

Visitors from around the world come to tour the old prison, walk through its cells, and see the famous escape spots. There are also audio tours and history displays that tell the stories of Alcatraz.
