Trump to Call Putin Amid Ukraine War Talks and Ceasefire Push

US President Donald Trump will talk on the phone with Russia’s President Vladimir Putin on Monday. This call is part of Trump’s ongoing effort to stop the war that began when Russia attacked Ukraine in 2022.

During his campaign to become president, Trump promised he would end the war within a day of taking office. But so far, his efforts have not made much progress.

Last week, representatives from Russia and Ukraine met in Istanbul for talks. This was the first time they met face-to-face in almost three years. However, the talks did not lead to any agreement to stop the fighting. Both sides exchanged harsh words. Ukraine said that Russia sent a group of low-level officials who had little power to make decisions.

After these talks, Trump said he would call Putin to try to stop the “bloodbath” in Ukraine. The war has caused huge damage in Ukraine and forced millions of people to leave their homes. Trump also said he planned to talk to Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky and leaders from NATO. He hopes a ceasefire will happen soon and the violent war will end.

Since becoming president in January, Trump has said many times that he wants the war to stop. Recently, he has supported a 30-day ceasefire with no conditions. But he has mainly put pressure on Ukraine and has not criticized Putin much.

Both Russia and the US have said that Putin and Trump need to meet in person to discuss the conflict. Trump believes that nothing will change until he meets Putin face-to-face.

At the Istanbul talks, which US officials also attended, Russia and Ukraine agreed to exchange 1,000 prisoners each. They also shared ideas about a possible truce but did not make any firm promises.

Ukraine’s chief negotiator, Defence Minister Rustem Umerov, said the next important step would be a meeting between Putin and Zelensky. Russia said it would think about this request, but only if the two sides first reach some agreements.

Ukraine’s western allies have accused Putin of ignoring calls for peace. They are asking for more sanctions against Russia.

Leaders of Britain, France, Germany, and Italy spoke with Trump on Sunday. A spokesman for British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said they discussed the need for an unconditional ceasefire and urged Putin to take peace talks seriously. They also talked about using sanctions if Russia does not cooperate.

Zelensky met with US Vice President JD Vance at the Vatican on Sunday after the Pope’s first mass. Zelensky said on Telegram that they talked about the Istanbul talks, where Russia sent low-level officials with no real power. They also discussed the need for more sanctions, trade between the countries, defense cooperation, the fighting on the battlefield, and future prisoner exchanges.

A senior official from Ukraine’s president’s office, who did not want to be named, told reporters that they also prepared for Monday’s phone call between Trump and Putin.

This meeting between Zelensky and Vance was the first since a tense meeting at the White House in February. At that meeting, Vance said Zelensky was "disrespectful" toward Trump. Trump told Zelensky that he should be more thankful and said Zelensky did not have much power in negotiations with Russia.

On Sunday, Ukraine said Russia launched a record number of drones to attack different parts of the country during the night. One woman was killed in the capital city, Kyiv. Another man was killed in the Kherson region in the southeast, where a railway station and some houses and cars were hit.

In a recent interview on Russian state television, Putin said that Russia wants to “remove the causes” of the crisis, create conditions for lasting peace, and ensure Russia’s security. However, he did not explain what those causes were.

Russia’s idea of the “root causes” usually means complaints about Kyiv and the West. Russia says it attacked Ukraine to “de-Nazify” and demilitarize the country, protect Russian-speaking people in eastern Ukraine, stop NATO from getting closer to Russia, and prevent Ukraine from moving closer to Western countries.

But Ukraine and its western allies say Russia’s attack is actually a way for Russia to take over land, like in old imperial times.
