In anticipation of the Songkran Festival 2026, Thailand has intensified its road safety initiatives following directives from Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul aimed at safeguarding travelers during this peak travel season.
Provincial governors have received explicit orders to enhance safety protocols. The campaign, marking a seven-day period from April 10 to April 16, focuses on accident reduction through rigorous law enforcement, public awareness, and improved travel facilitation.
On the inaugural day of the campaign, authorities documented 135 accidents, resulting in 132 injuries and 20 fatalities. The leading causes were determined to be speeding and abrupt lane changes, with motorcycles involved in over 70% of incidents.
To bolster safety measures, law enforcement will increase traffic law compliance checks, clamp down on drunk driving, and establish checkpoints offering water, snacks, first aid supplies, and resting areas for long-distance drivers, all while ensuring an uninterrupted traffic flow.
Moreover, local roads will see community and family checkpoints aimed at monitoring risky behaviors and proactively preventing accidents. Officials addressed public concerns regarding fuel availability, assuring that fuel supplies are secure nationwide.
As temperatures soar during the festival, residents are urged to be vigilant about heat-related symptoms such as fatigue and dizziness. Emergency services, including a 24/7 hotline at 1669, are on standby to respond swiftly to accidents or health crises.
