Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani’s political alliance has secured the highest number of seats in Iraq’s latest parliamentary election, according to the final results released on Monday. However, the formation of a new government is expected to take time as political negotiations intensify among major parties to build a parliamentary majority.
The Independent High Electoral Commission confirmed that Sudani’s bloc won 46 seats in the 329-member parliament, placing it ahead of other competing alliances. The State of Law coalition, led by former Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, obtained 29 seats, while the Taqaddum Party, which has a strong base in Iraq’s Sunni-majority regions, won 27 seats. The Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) secured 26 seats.
According to the commission, the national voter turnout reached 56.11 percent, reflecting a level of public engagement despite concerns about the political climate and long-standing dissatisfaction among younger voters.
Government Formation and Political Challenges
Following the announcement of the results, Iraq’s ruling coalition issued a statement declaring itself the largest parliamentary bloc. The alliance, which includes Sudani, said it would move forward with nominating a prime minister for the next phase of governance.
Although Sudani has been seeking a second term, many young voters expressed frustration during the election campaign, viewing the vote as a continuation of established political forces dividing Iraq’s oil revenues. Despite this, Sudani has attempted to present himself as a leader capable of stabilising the country and improving state institutions after years of political and security challenges.
Balancing International Influence and Security Pressures
The next government will face significant responsibilities involving both domestic and international pressures. Iraq remains a focal point of influence for both the United States and Iran. The incoming administration must navigate relations with Washington, while also dealing with dozens of armed groups that maintain close ties to Iran and often operate outside the state’s direct authority.
US officials have increased pressure on Baghdad to curb the activities of armed factions, while Iranian-aligned groups continue to hold political and security influence across the country. Managing this balance will be one of the most critical tests for Iraq’s next government.
Statements and Observations
Political leaders within the ruling alliance expressed confidence in forming a government capable of addressing current challenges. Meanwhile, analysts note that the process of government formation in Iraq can take several months due to the need for consensus among diverse political factions.
Experts also point out that despite winning the most seats, Sudani’s bloc will need to negotiate with multiple parties — including Sunni, Shia, and Kurdish groups — to form a stable governing majority, a process historically marked by long delays and complex political bargaining.
