Dandruff is a common scalp problem that becomes worse during winter. The white flakes, itching, and dryness can make anyone feel uncomfortable, especially when wearing dark clothes. While many people try shampoos and hair products to control dandruff, a dermatologist says that simple remedies at home can also help.
Dr Rinky Kapoor, Co-Founder and Director of The Esthetic Clinic, explains that dandruff happens when a fungus called Malassezia grows too much on the scalp. Extra oil production, stress, cold weather, harsh hair products, and hormonal changes can make dandruff worse. This leads to itching, flaking, and sometimes redness.
According to Dr Kapoor, mild cases of dandruff can be managed with gentle care and natural ingredients. Many useful remedies can be found in the kitchen, and they help soothe the scalp, control fungus, and reduce flakes. She suggests the following eight remedies to try at home.
Coconut Oil and Lemon
Coconut oil keeps the scalp soft and has antifungal benefits. Lemon balances the scalp’s pH level and reduces yeast growth. Together, they moisturise the scalp and stop flakes. Mix two tablespoons of coconut oil with one tablespoon of lemon juice. Massage it gently, let it stay for 20–30 minutes, and wash with a mild shampoo. Repeat twice a week.
Aloe Vera Gel
Aloe vera cools the scalp, reduces itching, and fights inflammation. It also removes dead skin gently. Apply fresh aloe vera gel from the plant directly to the scalp. Leave it for 30 minutes and wash it off with a mild shampoo.
Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV)
Apple cider vinegar controls fungus and restores scalp pH. It also clears product buildup. Mix equal parts ACV and water. After shampooing, pour the mix on the scalp, massage lightly, leave for five minutes, and rinse well.
Tea Tree Oil
Tea tree oil has strong antifungal and antibacterial properties. It fights the fungus responsible for dandruff. Add 4–5 drops of tea tree oil to two tablespoons of a carrier oil like coconut or jojoba. Massage and leave for 20–30 minutes before washing.
Yogurt and Honey Mask
Yogurt contains probiotics that help reduce fungus, while honey keeps the scalp moisturised and promotes healing. Mix three tablespoons of plain yogurt with one tablespoon of honey. Apply it to the scalp and hair, leave for 30 minutes, and wash with a mild shampoo.
Neem Leaves Rinse
Neem has been used for years to treat scalp infections. It fights dandruff-causing fungus and reduces redness and irritation. Boil a handful of neem leaves in two cups of water for 10–15 minutes. Strain and cool the water. Use it as a rinse after shampooing.
Baking Soda
Baking soda works as a gentle scrub for the scalp. It removes flakes and extra oil while stopping fungal growth. Mix one tablespoon of baking soda with water to make a paste. Massage it into the scalp for one to two minutes and rinse well. Use a mild conditioner afterward.
Olive Oil Massage
Olive oil moisturises a dry scalp, softens flakes, and improves blood flow to the roots. It helps loosen dandruff flakes so they can be washed off easily. Warm a small amount of olive oil, massage it into the scalp, and leave it for 30 minutes before washing.
These natural remedies are simple, safe, and effective for many people. Dr Kapoor says that with regular care, many mild dandruff problems can be managed at home. However, if dandruff becomes severe, itchy, or does not improve even after trying these remedies, then visiting a dermatologist is important.
