SpaceX had another big problem on Thursday when the top part of its huge Starship rocket exploded in space. The lower part of the rocket, called the booster, was saved, but the second part was lost. This was another failure for the company, even though one part of the test was a success.

The rocket took off from SpaceX’s launch site in Boca Chica, Texas, at 5:30 p.m. local time. This was the eighth test flight without any people on board. Everything seemed fine at first. The booster separated as planned, and the top part of the rocket continued flying. But just minutes later, live video showed the rocket spinning out of control. Then, the video feed suddenly stopped.
Soon after, videos appeared online showing burning pieces of the rocket falling from the sky over the Bahamas. A SpaceX worker later confirmed the failure, saying, “We lost contact with the ship.” This was the second time in a row that the top part of the rocket had exploded during a test flight.
The failure caused problems in the U.S. right away. The government quickly marked a “danger area” for falling rocket pieces, causing flight delays at big airports like Newark, Philadelphia, and Miami. The government later said that SpaceX must now do a full investigation before trying another test flight.
Even though the test failed, SpaceX is still following its method of “fail fast, learn fast.” This means they test rockets often, even if some fail, so they can improve quickly. The company was able to save the booster by catching it with special mechanical arms—an amazing engineering trick. But SpaceX still has a big problem with the second part of the rocket, which keeps failing.
Starship is the biggest and most powerful rocket ever built. It is 403 feet (123 meters) tall, which is taller than the Statue of Liberty. SpaceX wants to make it fully reusable, meaning the whole rocket can be used again and again. Starship is very important for Elon Musk’s dream of sending people to live on Mars. NASA also plans to use a special version of Starship to land astronauts on the Moon in the future. But before that happens, SpaceX must show that the rocket works properly, is safe for people, and can refuel while in space.
This latest failure is also raising new concerns about Musk’s power over the U.S. government. He is a top advisor to Donald Trump and is helping to make big changes in government agencies. Some people worry that Musk’s strong influence might lead to unfair advantages for his companies.
In the past, Musk often argued with the U.S. space agency about safety and environmental rules. But now, with Trump planning to return to power, some people think that SpaceX might get special treatment from the government.
There were also reports that a SpaceX engineer visited a U.S. office recently and told workers that their jobs could be at risk if they did not approve a new project. This project would allow SpaceX to provide internet to air traffic control. Another big telecom company currently has the contract for this work, but some believe SpaceX is trying to take it over. SpaceX has denied these claims, saying they are not true.
Before this test, SpaceX had already been told to stop flights after a failed test in January. Last week, the government allowed SpaceX to launch again, even though the earlier problem had not been fully investigated. Now that another explosion has happened, no one knows how long SpaceX will have to wait before trying again.
