South Africa, the reigning World Test Champions, are ready to begin their two-Test series against India on Friday with a strong determination to show that their title win earlier this year was not a one-time success. Team captain Temba Bavuma believes this series will be a chance for his players to prove that they truly deserve their world champion tag.

In June, South Africa made history by winning the World Test Championship (WTC) final against Australia at Lord’s. It was the team’s first major international cricket title, ending decades of near misses and the reputation of being “chokers.” The victory brought immense pride to the country and raised expectations from fans and experts alike.

Now, five months later, the team has arrived in India full of confidence and purpose. They know that winning in Indian conditions is one of the toughest challenges in world cricket, but Bavuma and his squad are ready to face it head-on. Speaking to reporters ahead of the opening Test at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens, Bavuma said, “We’re known as the champions, the current champions at this point. We have a lovely opportunity now coming up against India in their own conditions. There’s not many bigger challenges than that. It’s an opportunity for us to stamp ourselves with that label.”

Bavuma admitted that not everyone considers South Africa the best Test team yet. Many critics still believe the WTC win was just one good performance, and the upcoming matches are a chance to change that opinion. “We started this Test cycle with the ambition of seeing ourselves in the final again,” said Bavuma, who returns to action after recovering from a calf injury. “We have our own goals. We know where we want to be as a team, and we know at what point we want to start measuring ourselves up.”

The South African skipper added that while winning the WTC was a major achievement, consistency is key. “Winning the Test Championship is big in many ways, but we’d like to see ourselves after four years where we measure up as a team,” he said, emphasizing the importance of long-term progress.

For India, this series is equally important. After finishing runners-up in the first two editions of the World Test Championship, the team is hungry to go one step further. Captain Shubman Gill, who leads India in this series, said the matches against South Africa will play a key role in their campaign to reach the 2027 WTC final. “These two Tests are going to be very important to qualify for the WTC final,” Gill said. “They are the reigning World Test Champions, and we know that it won’t be easy.”

India currently sits third in the WTC standings, having drawn their series in England 2-2 and beaten West Indies 2-0 at home. Gill said the team understands the pressure and is prepared to fight through the difficult moments. “There will be difficult moments, but as a team, we have shown that whenever there are difficult moments, we have handled them well,” he said confidently.

India’s playing XI will see wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant return to the squad after recovering from injury. Pant will take his place behind the stumps, while Dhruv Jurel, who kept wickets in the West Indies series, will play as a specialist batter. Pant’s comeback is a major boost for India, as his aggressive batting and quick reflexes are crucial in home conditions.

The Indian team recently returned from a limited-overs tour of Australia, and Gill admitted that shifting focus to red-ball cricket so quickly was not easy. “It’s not simple to change from white-ball cricket to Test cricket in a few days,” Gill said. “But as a professional cricketer, you know these challenges will be thrown at you. The way you tackle them defines your greatness.”

The Eden Gardens pitch is expected to assist both pace and spin, offering a balanced contest between bat and ball. South Africa’s fast bowlers, including Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi, are ready to test India’s top order with pace and bounce. Meanwhile, India’s spinners, led by Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, will be looking to make use of home advantage.

The series also holds significant World Test Championship points, making it vital for both sides. For South Africa, it’s a chance to prove their dominance and start their title defense on a strong note. For India, it’s an opportunity to show their consistency and take a big step toward the WTC final.

As cricket fans around the world await the clash between the two strong sides, both teams are aware that every session will matter. With pride, points, and prestige at stake, the India vs South Africa Test series promises to be an exciting battle between champions and challengers.
