Bangladesh took full control of the Sylhet Test against Ireland on the second day, thanks to an outstanding unbeaten innings of 169 runs by opener Mahmudul Hasan Joy. His calm and confident batting helped the home team finish the day at 338 for 1, giving them a strong 52-run lead after Ireland were bowled out for 286 earlier in the morning. It was a day that completely belonged to Bangladesh, led by Mahmudul’s career-best performance.
The day began with Ireland resuming their first innings on 276 for 8. The visitors could only add 10 more runs before losing their final two wickets in the first 13 minutes of play. Their total of 286 was mainly built around half-centuries from Paul Stirling and debutant Cade Carmichael. Curtis Campher and Lorcan Tucker also contributed with scores in the forties, but none could convert their starts into big hundreds. The Bangladesh bowlers, despite some fielding errors on the first day, did a good job of maintaining pressure. Mehidy Hasan Miraz took three wickets, while Hasan Murad, Hasan Mahmud, and Taijul Islam picked up two wickets each.
When Bangladesh came out to bat, openers Mahmudul Hasan Joy and Shadman Islam gave their team the perfect start. The pair put on a strong 168-run opening partnership that set the tone for the innings. Shadman looked in great touch, scoring a quick 80 runs off just 104 balls. His innings included nine boundaries and one six, played mostly through cover and midwicket. His steady rotation of the strike helped Mahmudul settle and find his rhythm.
Mahmudul, on the other hand, played one of the finest innings of his Test career. Returning to the Test side after being dropped earlier, he made the most of his opportunity. His batting was a mix of solid defence and elegant strokeplay. He played confidently through the offside, driving and cutting with precision. Mahmudul struck 14 fours and four sixes during his unbeaten knock, showing great control and maturity throughout.
After Shadman was dismissed, Mominul Haque joined Mahmudul at the crease, and the two continued to build Bangladesh’s dominance. Their partnership added another 170 runs for the unbroken second wicket, taking the total to 338 for 1 by stumps. Mominul was unbeaten on 80 runs at the end of the day, playing a patient and composed innings. His 124-ball stay included five boundaries and two sixes, supporting Mahmudul perfectly from the other end.
Mahmudul’s innings gained more confidence after reaching his century. He started to play more freely, taking on the Irish bowlers. He attacked Curtis Campher and part-timer Harry Tector with a series of boundaries and lofted shots. His sixes down the ground were hit cleanly, often sailing over the bowler’s head or midwicket. Every stroke showed his growing confidence and timing.
For Ireland, it was a tough day in the field. Their bowlers struggled to find consistency on a good batting surface. As the pitch offered little movement, the Bangladeshi batters took full advantage. The visitors’ body language faded as the day went on, and Mahmudul’s dominance left them with few options.
Bangladesh’s strong batting performance on Day 2 has put them in complete control of the Test. With two well-set batters at the crease and a long batting lineup to follow, they will look to build a big first-innings total on Day 3. Their goal will be to bat once and put Ireland under pressure with a huge lead.
The Sylhet crowd enjoyed every moment of Mahmudul’s fine innings. His return to form and career-best score of 169 not out has strengthened Bangladesh’s chances of winning the Test. If the team continues in this manner, they will be well on their way to securing a convincing victory over Ireland in the first Test of the series.
