Australia have confirmed that fast bowler Sean Abbott will miss the first Ashes Test against England due to a moderate grade hamstring injury. The setback comes just days before the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) series opener, scheduled to begin on November 21 at the Perth Stadium. Abbott’s absence has added to Australia’s growing list of fitness concerns ahead of the crucial home series.

Injury Details And Team Concerns

Abbott sustained the injury while playing in the ongoing Sheffield Shield season, where several Australian players are using the domestic competition to fine-tune their form ahead of the Ashes. The medical team has confirmed that the injury is not severe, but it will still prevent him from featuring in the opening Test. His recovery timeline remains uncertain, and team management will monitor his progress before deciding on his availability for the rest of the series.

In another concern for Australia, pacer Josh Hazlewood also experienced tightness in his right hamstring during the same Sheffield Shield fixture. He was immediately withdrawn from the field as a precaution and later underwent scans. Fortunately for the Australians, the results revealed no muscle strain, allowing Hazlewood to remain in contention for the Perth Test. His fitness will continue to be managed carefully in the lead-up to the game.

Adding to Australia’s fitness troubles, regular Test captain Pat Cummins is also recovering from a back injury. Cummins, who missed the recent Sheffield Shield matches, is aiming to return to full fitness before the series begins. He attended the Shield fixture in Sydney and shared his relief after learning of Hazlewood’s clean scan results.

Cummins Confident Of Recovery

Speaking further about his own condition, Cummins sounded optimistic about his recovery progress. “(The Gabba) is what we’re building towards,” he said, referring to Australia’s next major Test venue after Perth. “Hopefully by Perth I’m up near 100 per cent, and then we’ll see where we’re at. It’s still pretty aggressive, going from nothing to getting ready for a Test match in four weeks. But we’re going to give it a good shot.” His determination reflects Australia’s strong desire to defend their Ashes title and maintain their lead in the WTC standings.

Abbott’s injury could significantly affect Australia’s bowling balance for the first Test. The 31-year-old right-arm seamer has been a dependable backup option for Cummins, Hazlewood, and Mitchell Starc in recent seasons. His absence means selectors might have to consider recalling experienced pacers such as Scott Boland or giving an opportunity to a young fast bowler like Lance Morris. Both players have been in good form in domestic cricket and could be in line for selection.

While Australia deals with injuries, England will look to take advantage and make a strong start to the five-match Ashes series. After dropping points in the home series against India earlier this year, England are eager to climb the World Test Championship standings. The team, led by Ben Stokes, has already begun training sessions in Perth to adapt to local conditions and the pace-friendly pitches typical of Western Australia.

The Ashes series carries immense importance beyond the traditional rivalry. It also plays a crucial role in determining standings in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC).
