Italian tennis star Jannik Sinner stunned the tennis world by defeating Czech player Jiri Lehecka 6-4, 6-4 in a rain-delayed Miami Open final on Sunday. With this victory, Sinner became the first man in history to complete the prestigious Sunshine Double without dropping a single set.
Sinner, currently ranked world number two, dominated on serve, winning 92% of his first-serve points and successfully saving all three break points he faced. This triumph also extends his impressive streak of 17 consecutive Masters 1000 matches without losing a set.
Speaking after the match, Sinner said, “We did a lot of work to be in this position, so I'm really, really happy. Making the Sunshine Double here for the first time is incredible. It’s something I would have never thought possible, and we achieved it somehow.”
The match saw intermittent rain delays, including a 90-minute pause during the second set. Sinner kept his focus and energy up by casually playing football with his team during the stoppages. He broke early to take a 3-1 lead in the first set and relied on his dominant serve to close it out.
Lehecka, world number 22 and appearing in his first Masters 1000 final, showed resilience by fighting off five break points in the second set to take a 4-3 lead. However, Sinner capitalized on his sixth break point opportunity to pull ahead 5-4 and sealed the championship with a forehand volley.
By winning both the Indian Wells and Miami Open back-to-back, Sinner joins an elite group of players who have achieved the Sunshine Double, including legends like Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Andre Agassi, Pete Sampras, Michael Chang, Marcelo Rios, and Jim Courier. The last man to accomplish this feat was Federer in 2017.
Sinner’s historic Miami victory cements his status as one of the rising stars in men’s tennis, combining resilience, precision, and mental strength under challenging conditions.
