Monterrey: Iraq ended a four-decade-long wait for World Cup qualification after defeating Bolivia 2-1 in a thrilling inter-confederation playoff on Tuesday. The victory confirmed Iraq as the 48th and final team to secure a place in the upcoming tournament, set to be held across Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
Iraq made a strong start to the match, taking an early lead in the 10th minute through Ali Al Hamadi, who capitalized on a corner to head the ball past Bolivia’s goalkeeper. The early pressure from Iraq kept Bolivia on the back foot, with another close chance denied by a fingertip save.
Despite the early setback, Bolivia gradually found their rhythm and equalized before halftime. Moises Paniagua scored from close range after a forward pass created confusion in Iraq’s defense, ensuring both teams went into the break level.
The decisive moment came in the second half when Aymen Hussein scored the winning goal in the 53rd minute. Reacting quickly to a well-delivered cross from substitute Marko Farji, Hussein guided the ball into the net to restore Iraq’s lead.
Iraq had opportunities to extend their advantage, but missed chances kept Bolivia in the game. In the closing stages, Bolivia pushed hard with multiple corner attempts, aiming to force extra time. However, Iraq’s disciplined defense held firm, securing a historic victory.
With this win, Iraq return to the World Cup for the first time since 1986, when they made their only previous appearance. The team will now compete in Group I alongside strong contenders France, Norway, and Senegal in the tournament scheduled from June 11 to July 19.
Head coach Graham Arnold praised his players’ determination, highlighting their fighting spirit and defensive resilience as key factors behind the win. He also acknowledged Bolivia’s performance, noting that the match remained competitive until the final whistle.
This qualification marks a significant milestone for Iraqi football, bringing joy to millions of fans and signaling a new chapter on the global stage.
