Australia’s star striker Sam Kerr made a dream return to Chelsea’s starting lineup by scoring twice in a dominant 6-0 win over St Polten in Austria. The match, played on Tuesday in the Women’s Champions League, marked Kerr’s first start for Chelsea in nearly two years — precisely 692 days since her last full appearance. It was also her first time completing 90 minutes since recovering from a serious anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury suffered in January 2024.
The road to recovery was long for the 32-year-old forward. After tearing her ACL, Kerr underwent surgery and intensive rehabilitation that kept her out of action for several months. She made her return to the pitch in September 2025, but manager Emma Hayes had eased her back gradually by giving her substitute appearances. Tuesday’s full start was a major step in her comeback journey — and she made it count with two well-taken goals in the second half.
Kerr began the match with energy and hunger, but her early attempts did not go as planned. She missed a few chances and had one goal ruled out for offside. However, as the game progressed, she found her rhythm. In the second half, Kerr showed her trademark composure and finishing ability, scoring twice to help Chelsea secure an emphatic 6-0 win. Her performance reminded fans of why she remains one of the best strikers in world football.
After the match, Kerr spoke about her happiness at being back in top-level football. “I'm just happy to be out here playing in the Champions League again, with an amazing team. I'm relishing every moment,” she told Disney Plus. She also admitted that getting back into full-match fitness took effort. “It felt like I had to work myself into it, but yeah, happy to score. When you come on for 20 minutes it’s a bit hectic, so this was nice,” she added.
Chelsea’s victory against St Polten showcased their strength and depth as one of Europe’s top women’s teams. The London side completely controlled the match, scoring six goals without reply. The win strengthens their position in the Champions League group stage as they aim to finally lift the European trophy that has eluded them in recent years. Manager Emma Hayes praised the team’s focus and intensity, highlighting Kerr’s performance as a key positive.
Beyond club football, Sam Kerr’s successful return is excellent news for the Australian national team. The Matildas are preparing to host the Women’s Asian Cup in March, and Kerr is expected to play a leading role. Having reclaimed the captaincy earlier this year, she is once again the team’s main attacking force. Kerr’s presence and experience could be crucial as Australia aims to win the title on home soil.
Kerr’s year has not been without personal challenges. In early 2025, she faced legal issues in London but was later found not guilty of racially abusing a police officer. The verdict allowed her to refocus on football, and she has since played in friendlies against England and Wales for the Matildas. Her mental strength and ability to stay positive have earned her admiration from teammates and fans alike.
Kerr insists she feels ready for the next stage of her career. “Getting some good minutes in the national team was a good setup,” she said. “I’m definitely fit enough — it’s just about getting more miles in the legs now. I feel 100% but I was out for a while, so I have to build myself up.” Her comments reflect the determination that has always defined her approach to the game.
Kerr will now turn her focus to domestic football as Chelsea prepare to face Liverpool in the Women’s Super League on Sunday. The upcoming match will give her another chance to continue her scoring form and help Chelsea maintain their strong league campaign. Fans are eager to see how she performs after this confidence-boosting European night.
Sam Kerr’s comeback is more than a sporting story — it’s an inspiring tale of perseverance and love for the game. After nearly two years away from the starting lineup, she returned stronger, sharper, and more determined. Her two-goal performance against St Polten proved that she remains one of the most dangerous forwards in world football. As she rebuilds her rhythm with Chelsea and prepares to lead Australia again, Kerr’s journey stands as a powerful example of resilience in sport.
