Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has started working on a new and advanced traffic signal control system called UTC-UX Fusion. This system will use artificial intelligence (AI), predictive analytics, and digital twin technology to make Dubai’s roads smarter and more efficient. The upgraded system will be installed at all major intersections in the city, and the project is expected to be completed by the first half of 2026.

RTA is committed to implementing the latest smart technologies and following the best global practices for managing traffic at intersections. These efforts support Dubai’s goal of becoming a smart and sustainable city. By making roads more efficient and improving traffic flow, RTA is helping Dubai strengthen its position as a leader in intelligent mobility solutions.

Hussain Al Banna, CEO of the Traffic and Roads Agency at RTA, said, “This project is in line with RTA’s vision of becoming the world leader in seamless and sustainable mobility. By improving traffic signal systems, we aim to reduce congestion at intersections by 10% to 20%. This will help all road users, including drivers, public transport passengers, pedestrians, and cyclists. It will also prioritize emergency vehicles and public transport, ensuring smoother and safer travel.”

Talking about the advanced features of the system, Al Banna explained, “The new traffic signal system can predict traffic patterns and adjust signal timings before congestion happens. This will help improve the overall efficiency of the city’s road network. The system also uses digital twin technology, which means we can test and analyze changes in signal timings before applying them in real life. This helps in making better decisions for traffic management. Additionally, the system will use data from future road sensors to further improve its performance.”

He added, “The UTC-UX Fusion system can quickly adapt to real-time traffic changes. It continuously analyzes data and makes intelligent decisions to optimize signal timings. It also supports future transportation technologies like Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS/V2X), which allow smart vehicles to communicate with traffic signals. This will improve traffic flow, reduce travel time, and enhance the overall transportation experience in Dubai.”

With this initiative, RTA is taking another step toward making Dubai’s roads safer, more efficient, and ready for the future of smart mobility.
