Qatar Airways has responded to criticism after a couple claimed they were forced to sit next to a deceased passenger for several hours on a long-haul flight. The airline defended its actions, stating that its crew handled the situation professionally and followed standard industry procedures.
Couple Speaks Out About Shocking Experience
Australian couple Mitchell Ring and Jennifer Colin shared their disturbing experience on a Qatar Airways flight from Melbourne to Doha. Speaking to Channel Nine, they said that a fellow passenger became unwell and later passed away during the flight. However, instead of being moved, Mr. Ring remained seated next to the deceased woman for the final four hours of the journey.

According to Mr. Ring, the cabin crew asked him to move slightly to accommodate the woman's body, which was then covered with blankets. His wife, Ms. Colin, was invited by another passenger to sit across the aisle, but she was not officially relocated by the airline. Despite vacant seats being available, Mr. Ring was not offered an alternative spot.
"We understand the airline is not responsible for what happened to the poor lady, but there should be a proper plan in place for such situations," Ms. Colin said.
Airline Defends Crew’s Response
In a statement to the BBC, Qatar Airways explained that the incident was handled with professionalism and care. They emphasized that their crew members are well-trained for emergencies, including unexpected deaths on board.
The airline also stated that an internal review found the crew’s response was "in line with training and industry standard practice." They assured that affected passengers, along with the deceased woman’s family, had been offered support and compensation.
“Passengers were accommodated in other seats, and a crew member remained with the deceased passenger at all times until the flight landed in Doha,” the airline added.
Qatar Airways acknowledged that deaths do occasionally occur during flights and stressed that its staff strives to handle such incidents with "respect and dignity."
Frustration Over Lack of Support
Upon landing in Doha, passengers were asked to remain seated while medical staff and police boarded the plane. Mr. Ring recalled seeing the woman’s face when emergency responders removed the blankets. He found it distressing that passengers were not allowed to disembark before the medical team arrived.
"I can’t believe they told us to stay,” he said, adding that the experience was deeply upsetting.
The couple also expressed disappointment over the lack of follow-up from the airline. "They have a duty of care, not just to their staff but also to passengers. No one from Qatar Airways has checked in to see if we need support or counseling," Mr. Ring said.
Airline Apologizes for Distress
Qatar Airways had previously issued an apology for any distress the incident caused. "Our thoughts are with the family of the passenger who sadly passed away on board our flight," the statement read. The airline reaffirmed its commitment to handling such sensitive situations as professionally as possible.
Despite the apology, the incident has raised questions about how airlines manage medical emergencies and the well-being of passengers affected by such events.
