Lionel Messi has reached a historic milestone by scoring his 900th goal in official matches, becoming only the second player in football history to achieve this feat after his long-time rival Cristiano Ronaldo.
The Argentine forward achieved the landmark during Inter Miami CF’s 1-1 draw against Nashville SC in the second leg of the CONCACAF Champions Cup on Wednesday.
Despite Messi’s early goal, Inter Miami were eliminated from the tournament on away goals after the first leg ended 0-0.
Messi made an instant impact by scoring within the first 10 minutes. He received the ball inside the box, shifted to his stronger left foot, and calmly placed a low shot across goal to give Miami the lead.
However, Nashville SC responded in the second half when Cristian Espinoza scored the equalizer after a scramble inside the penalty area. Inter Miami pushed hard for a winner but failed to score again, ending their Champions Cup journey.
With this goal, Messi reached 900 goals in 1,142 matches, while Ronaldo had achieved the same milestone in 1,236 games. Ronaldo currently leads with 965 career goals and aims to become the first player to score 1,000 goals.
Most of Messi’s goals came during his time at FC Barcelona, where he scored 672 goals in 778 appearances, making him the club’s all-time top scorer. He has also scored 106 goals for Argentina national football team and 80 goals for Inter Miami so far.
On the other hand, Ronaldo scored 450 goals for Real Madrid CF, 145 goals for Manchester United, 123 for Portugal national football team, 101 for Juventus FC, and 115 for Al Nassr FC.
While Messi has now joined Ronaldo in the 900-goal club, the race between the two legends continues as fans await who will finish with the highest tally in football history.
