Manila, Philippines – November 18, 2025: Tens of thousands of Filipinos took to the streets on Monday in a massive anti-corruption rally, demanding accountability for alleged mismanagement in flood-mitigation projects that have sparked public outrage and shaken investor confidence.
The demonstration, held for the second consecutive day, saw more than 200,000 participants gather in Manila, marking one of the largest civic mobilizations in recent years. Organizers and eyewitnesses reported that many demonstrators set up tents to stay overnight, ensuring the protest would continue until Tuesday. Since it began on Sunday, the rally has reportedly drawn over 600,000 people, emphasizing the widespread discontent among citizens.
The protest was organized by Iglesia Ni Cristo, a religious group with approximately two million members known for bloc voting, signaling the group’s significant influence in Philippine civil and political life. Demonstrators voiced frustration over what they perceive as corruption in government-led flood mitigation projects, some of which have been criticized for inefficiency and potential financial mismanagement.
Analysts have noted that the ongoing controversy has contributed to economic unease. The Philippines recorded a slowdown in public spending during the third quarter, coinciding with a four-year low in GDP growth, a situation some attribute in part to diminished investor confidence amid corruption concerns.
Authorities in Manila have maintained a visible presence to ensure safety during the protests. Police and local officials worked to manage traffic and maintain order, while urging protesters to remain peaceful.
In statements to the press, demonstrators expressed the urgent need for government transparency and accountability. "We are here to demand that our leaders be held responsible for their actions," said one participant. "Flood prevention is essential to protect our communities, and the public deserves honesty in these projects."
The scale of the rally demonstrates a growing civic engagement among Filipinos, reflecting a population increasingly concerned about governance and public accountability. Observers note that such mass mobilizations can influence political discourse and policy priorities, especially ahead of elections or legislative decisions.
As the protest continues into Tuesday, the eyes of both domestic and international media remain on Manila, highlighting the intersection of public dissent, government accountability, and economic stability in the Philippines.
