South Africa began their Test series against India with a strong and memorable victory at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Under the leadership of captain Temba Bavuma, the team won the first Test by 30 runs. The win was special because it was South Africa’s first Test victory on Indian soil since 2010. Their coach, Shukri Conrad, praised Bavuma for his brave performance and for showing why he is one of the best batters in the world right now.
Temba Bavuma played an unbeaten and very important innings of 55 runs in the second innings. The pitch was difficult, the ball was turning sharply, and batting was extremely challenging. Despite these problems, Bavuma stayed calm and followed his game plan. His innings helped South Africa set a target of 124 runs for India. Although the target was not very big, the conditions made it tough, and India were bowled out for just 93.
It is important to note that Bavuma was the only batter in the entire match to score more than 40 runs. No other player from either team reached that mark, showing just how exceptional his performance was.
After the match, coach Shukri Conrad spoke proudly about Bavuma. He said that having Bavuma back in the team brings balance and calmness. According to Conrad, Bavuma has been one of the best batters in the world for the last 18 to 24 months. During this time, Bavuma has averaged 57.00 with the bat and remains unbeaten as captain in 11 Test matches, winning 10 of them.
Conrad explained that Bavuma knew exactly how to approach his innings. He accepted that the ball might beat his bat on the outside but made sure he did not allow the ball to get through the inside. This smart strategy helped him survive on a very difficult pitch and keep his team in the match.
The South African coach also said that both teams were surprised by how the pitch behaved on the first day. They expected the ball to turn later in the match, but the wicket offered a lot of turn and bounce right from day one. This made batting difficult for everyone and created uncertainty for both sides. Conrad admitted that nobody expected such conditions so early in the match.
Conrad highlighted that this win gives the team great confidence moving forward. Earlier in the year, South Africa won the World Test Championship final, but he said that the win in India is equally special for the team. Winning at Eden Gardens, one of the most iconic cricket stadiums in the world, and breaking a 15-year drought in India is a moment the team will remember for a long time.
Conrad also emphasised the team's strong spirit and resilience. He said that even if South Africa does not always have the same talent or experience as some other cricket teams, they make up for it with teamwork, discipline, and belief. The players never give up, even in difficult situations, and this match proved how determined they are to fight until the end.
He added that the victory shows the team’s growth and strength in dealing with pressure. The ability to stay focused, believe in each other, and support the captain made the win possible.
With South Africa now leading the series 1-0, both teams will look forward to the second and final Test. The match will be played in Guwahati on Saturday. India will try to make a strong comeback, while South Africa will aim to continue their winning form and secure a historic series win in India.
The stage is set for another exciting match as both teams prepare for the next challenge.
