Dos Bocas, Mexico: Mexico’s state-owned oil company, Pemex, confirmed that a fire at its Dos Bocas refinery in southern Mexico has been successfully brought under control, with no injuries reported. The incident marks the second fire at the facility in less than a month, raising fresh concerns over operational safety.

The blaze broke out on Thursday in a warehouse area of the refinery, also known as the Olmeca refinery. According to official statements, around 150 emergency response specialists were deployed to contain the flames, preventing the situation from escalating further.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum stated that the fire was limited to a coke storage section within the refinery complex and had been fully contained. She also confirmed that personnel from the navy and defense ministry assisted Pemex workers in tackling the blaze.

Visuals circulating on social media showed thick black smoke and large flames rising from the facility located in the Gulf port of Dos Bocas. However, independent verification of these images has not yet been confirmed.

Pemex Director Victor Rodriguez is expected to visit the site to oversee recovery and assess any potential damage. The company has not yet disclosed the cause of the fire or the extent of losses.

The latest incident follows a deadly fire on March 17, which claimed five lives after oily residue ignited near the refinery’s perimeter. The recurrence of such incidents highlights ongoing challenges at the site.

The Dos Bocas refinery, built at a cost of approximately $21 billion—more than double its initial budget—was a flagship project of former President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador. The project was aimed at reducing Mexico’s reliance on fuel imports and strengthening domestic energy independence.

Despite its strategic importance, the refinery has faced multiple operational setbacks since beginning operations in 2024. It has also struggled to meet its originally announced production targets.

As of January, the refinery was processing around 205,000 barrels of crude oil per day, producing over 77,000 barrels of gasoline and nearly 78,500 barrels of diesel daily—well below its maximum capacity of 340,000 barrels per day.

The latest fire incident is likely to intensify scrutiny over safety standards and efficiency at one of Mexico’s most significant energy infrastructure projects.
