In light of escalating tensions in Lebanon, Canada has urged for an immediate ceasefire and enhanced civilian protections. Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand reiterated the significance of upholding international law and prioritizing the safety of civilians affected by the conflict.
The Canadian government called on Israel to honor Lebanon’s territorial integrity and urged Hezbollah to disarm, adhering to directives from the Lebanese leadership. It’s imperative that both parties commit to a lasting ceasefire to avert further violence and civilian casualties.
Minister Anand denounced the recent Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon, particularly those affecting Beirut, which resulted in civilian harm and infrastructural damage. Simultaneously, she condemned Hezbollah’s attacks on Israel, labeling them as indiscriminate and detrimental to civilian safety.
Canada reaffirmed its stance in support of Lebanon's governmental efforts to restore authority across its territory. This initiative includes addressing the activities of armed factions like Hezbollah, which Canada recognizes as a terrorist group, aiming for long-term stability in the region.
Additionally, Canada underscored the urgency for diplomatic solutions to the ongoing unrest, encouraging a reinvigoration of international efforts towards a sustainable peace, with a strong emphasis on recognizing Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
This statement embodies Canada’s broader approach to the conflict—advocating for de-escalation, the safeguarding of civilian lives, and the promotion of dialogue as a means to resolve regional tensions.
