In a significant development, the Indonesian military has designated the acid attack case involving human rights advocate Andrie Yunus to its military prosecutors, advancing towards the trial stage.
Officials report that the Military Police Headquarters of the Indonesian National Armed Forces has concluded its investigation, subsequently transferring case documents, suspects, and pertinent evidence to prosecutors in Jakarta.
Prosecutors will assess whether the case satisfies both formal and material legal prerequisites. If considered adequate, it will move forward to the Jakarta Military Court, with trial proceedings anticipated to commence shortly.
The case includes four active-duty military members from the Strategic Intelligence Agency (BAIS) who were detained for their involvement in the acid attack. They face premeditated assault charges under Indonesian statutes, potentially facing up to seven years of imprisonment.
This incident has sparked considerable public interest and alarm from civil society organizations advocating for the case to be tried in a civilian court rather than a military tribunal. Activists express concerns that military trials may compromise both transparency and accountability.
Demonstrations have erupted in Jakarta, with protesters calling for a comprehensive and independent inquiry into the assault, including any possible higher-level involvement.
Despite public outcry, authorities assert that all investigative actions have adhered to relevant legal protocols, emphasizing that the judiciary will follow existing regulations.
This case remains particularly sensitive, shedding light on larger issues relating to human rights, military accountability, and the involvement of armed forces in civilian affairs in Indonesia.
