Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum faced an unsettling incident while interacting with citizens in downtown Mexico City on Tuesday. During the public interaction, a man, who appeared intoxicated, approached the president and attempted to touch her and lean in for a kiss before being stopped by a government official.
In video footage circulating online, Sheinbaum can be seen maintaining composure, gently pushing the man’s hands away while smiling and reassuringly saying, “Don’t worry.” The president’s office has not issued an official comment on the incident.
Sheinbaum is known for her approachable style, often engaging directly with the public through selfies, handshakes, and street interactions, following the example of her political mentor, former President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador. Despite the presence of security personnel, the video suggests the man briefly breached her personal space before being restrained.
The incident comes during a tense period in Mexico, where Sheinbaum has recently addressed concerns over political violence, including the public assassination of a mayor in Michoacan state. On Tuesday, she met with the widow of the slain mayor, highlighting ongoing efforts to address safety and governance issues across the country.
The episode underscores the challenges faced by public figures in balancing accessibility with security, particularly amid rising concerns about violence and public safety in Mexico.
