England have indicated that Ollie Pope is likely to bat at No.3 in their warm-up match against the Lions on Thursday. This suggests he is in strong contention to retain the spot over Jacob Bethell for the first Ashes Test in Perth next week.
Pope’s position has been under scrutiny since Bethell impressed in his maiden Test series in New Zealand, scoring three half-centuries in the No.3 role. England’s recent decision to transfer the vice-captaincy from Pope to Harry Brook also fueled speculation over potential changes.
England players were informed that they would be “going hard” in the three-day practice match by Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes at the start of Tuesday’s training session. The warm-up match aims to provide competitive preparation ahead of the Ashes.
Some England players may also feature for the Lions, who have brought an 18-man squad to Australia. This ensures high-quality opposition, helping England sharpen their skills and strategies in match-like conditions.
Speaking to England’s social media channels, Harry Brook said the team intends to go 100% during the warm-up match. “We’re going to try and beat them. It’s not going to be just a mess-around. It’s good preparation playing against some of the best players in England ahead of the Ashes,” he explained.
Brook also highlighted the opportunity to get valuable time in the middle on local pitches before heading to Optus Stadium, where the first Test will be held. The team is focused on adjusting to the conditions to ensure a smooth start to the series.
Marcus Trescothick, assistant coach to McCullum, gave a strong indication that Pope will retain his No.3 spot for the warm-up. “I’m presuming the same sort of No.3 we’ve had for a period of time,” Trescothick told BBC Sport.
He added that performances in the warm-up match are unlikely to dramatically change selection for the first Test. The team has been built consistently over time, allowing players to enter the Ashes with confidence and stability.
England have been training at Lilac Hill, home ground of Midland-Guildford CC, which will also host the warm-up match. Brook noted that the pitches at Lilac Hill are slow and low, quite different from those at Optus Stadium.
The team plans to utilize the upcoming three to four days before the first Test to acclimate to conditions, get valuable match practice, and fine-tune strategies. The warm-up match will serve as the perfect opportunity to prepare for the challenging series ahead.
England’s coaching staff and players remain focused on preparing for the Ashes with a balance of competitive practice and tactical planning. The warm-up match against the Lions provides a controlled environment to test combinations, assess player form, and sharpen skills.
With Pope expected to retain the No.3 position, England aim to enter the first Test in Perth with a settled batting lineup and confident mindset, ready to take on Australia in what promises to be a highly competitive Ashes series.
