Students can choose between two areas: Astrophysics or Space Systems. Both areas are designed to prepare students for jobs in universities or in the growing space industry. A key part of the program is its focus on research. Students will have to do a three-year research project, which will lead to a PhD thesis. The program will help students learn how to plan, carry out, and finish complex tasks.
His Excellency Dr. Sultan bin Saif Al Neyadi, Minister of State for Youth Affairs and an astronaut, said: “As an astronaut, I’ve seen how education and new ideas in space science can help people on Earth and beyond. This program will help grow talent for our country’s space plans and inspire future generations to explore space and help our world.”
His Excellency Eng. Salem Butti Al Qubaisi, Director General of the UAE Space Agency, also spoke about the program. He said, “The new PhD program in Astrophysics and Space Systems completes the full range of space education in the UAE. Space research and learning are important for the UAE’s vision to grow knowledge and creativity. This program will help the UAE strengthen its role in the space industry.”
The program will begin in the fall of 2025, and students can apply until 15 January 2025. It will use the great resources and expertise at NYU Abu Dhabi to train future scientists and engineers to help with upcoming space missions.
NYUAD Provost Arlie Petters said: “This new PhD program shows our commitment to teaching and research in subjects that are important for the UAE and the future of the world. By using our top-class research facilities and working with leading space organizations, we are preparing students to lead in the growing space sector of the UAE. This program also helps NYUAD become a center for important research and education that supports the UAE’s plans for space exploration and technology.”
Andrea V. Macciò, Professor of Physics and Director of the Center for Astrophysics and Space Science at NYUAD, said: “This new PhD program is a big step for space research at NYUAD. People have been interested in the stars for a long time. The discoveries we’ve made in space have changed the way we communicate and watch over the planet. This program will help train the next generation of scientists who will lead the way in space exploration.”
NYU Abu Dhabi has already become an important place for Astrophysics and Space Science in the region. The team behind the new PhD program has written over 1,000 scientific papers that have helped space science. Through this program, NYUAD plans to keep helping shape the future of space research and exploration.
