The National Multiple Sclerosis Society (NMSS) has released three new digital guides to help people living with multiple sclerosis (MS) and other chronic conditions in the UAE. These guides aim to provide useful advice, resources, and support, continuing the society’s commitment to improving the lives of those affected by MS.

The announcement was made at the 5th Abu Dhabi Integrated Mental Health Conference (ADIMHC), where Dr. Ruqqia Mir, a Consultant Neurologist at Yas Clinic Khalifa City, led a special session. Yas Clinic is operated by the Abu Dhabi Stem Cell Centre, and Dr. Mir is also a member of the NMSS Medical Advisory Committee.

During her session, Dr. Mir spoke about the importance of integrated care in improving mental health outcomes for people with chronic conditions. She highlighted NMSS as an example of how collaboration between different sectors can create better support systems for patients.

New Guides for MS Patients

Dr. Mir’s presentation introduced some key initiatives launched by NMSS to assist individuals living with MS. These include:

  • MS Helpline – A service that provides immediate support, guidance, and referrals to MS patients.

  • NMSS Directory – A comprehensive list of specialists and treatment centers to help patients find the right care.

  • Treatment Guidelines – Evidence-based best practices for MS management, helping doctors and patients make informed decisions.

The new digital guides, available for free on the NMSS website, focus on three essential areas: mental health, nutrition, and explaining MS to children.

What’s Inside the Guides?

  1. The Mental Wellness Handbook & Reflection Journal
This guide helps people with MS take care of their emotional well-being. It includes self-care techniques such as mindfulness, journaling, and goal-setting activities.

  2. The Nutrition Guide
Designed for people with MS and other autoimmune conditions, this guide offers practical diet tips and healthier ingredient alternatives. It even includes regional recipes tailored for the UAE.

  3. Explaining MS to Your Children Guide
Endorsed by the Abu Dhabi Early Childhood Authority (ECA), this guide helps parents talk to their children about MS. It provides easy ways to explain the condition and includes fun activities to help kids of all ages understand MS simply and engagingly.

Why Mental Health Matters in MS Care

Dr. Mir emphasized that mental health plays a crucial role in MS management. She explained that combining mental wellness strategies with medical treatment can improve the quality of life for people living with MS. "By addressing mental health alongside physical health, we can provide more effective care for MS patients," she said.

At the conference, NMSS also called for stronger partnerships between healthcare providers, insurers, policymakers, and advocacy groups. The society stressed that working together is key to building a better mental health support system for people living with MS in the UAE.

With these new digital guides, NMSS hopes to make life easier for people with MS, their families, and healthcare professionals. By offering practical advice and easy-to-follow strategies, the society aims to empower individuals to take charge of their health and well-being.
