In a historic milestone for space exploration, Artemis II successfully concluded its mission as the crew capsule safely re-entered Earth’s atmosphere and splashed down in the Pacific Ocean on Friday after nearly 10 days in space. The mission marks the first time in over half a century that humans have travelled to the vicinity of the Moon.
Operated by NASA, the gumdrop-shaped Orion spacecraft, named Integrity, made a controlled descent and landed in calm waters off the Southern California coast at approximately 5:07 PM Pacific Time (0007 GMT Saturday). The safe return highlights a major achievement in the agency’s ambitious lunar exploration programme.
During the mission, the four-member crew journeyed as far as 252,756 miles from Earth, venturing deeper into space than any human mission before. The spacecraft covered a total distance of 694,392 miles (over 1.1 million kilometres), completing two Earth orbits and executing a critical lunar flyby at a distance of about 4,000 miles from the Moon’s surface.
Artemis II represents the first crewed test flight in NASA’s Artemis programme, which aims to land astronauts back on the Moon by 2028. The mission serves as a crucial stepping stone, validating systems required for future deep-space travel.
The most critical phase of the mission came during re-entry, widely considered the riskiest segment. The successful performance of the Orion capsule’s heat shield under extreme temperatures and forces confirmed its capability to safely return astronauts from lunar trajectories.
With this achievement, NASA moves a significant step closer to its long-term goal of establishing a sustained human presence on the Moon and paving the way for future missions to Mars.
