A new survey indicates that many Malaysians are prioritizing food delivery over dining in at restaurants and cafes as they confront rising living costs. This pattern underscores an adjustment in consumer behavior in the face of financial strain.
Research from Rakuten Insight shows that the number of Malaysians intending to limit dining out has jumped from 52.9% in March to 61.6% in April. In contrast, only a marginal rise was noted among those cutting back on food delivery services, from 30% to 32%.
Experts assert that dining out is perceived as a luxury expense involving ambiance and social interaction, while food delivery is viewed as a more accessible and pragmatic choice for busy households.
The findings also reveal that many Malaysians see food delivery as essential, particularly among dual-income households and those with hectic schedules. This trend indicates a move toward convenience-focused spending while attempting to keep non-essential expenses in check.
