Singapore is embarking on an ambitious project to construct its inaugural 3D-printed concrete pedestrian bridge in Jurong, marking a notable advancement in modern construction techniques. Spearheaded by the Land Transport Authority, this bridge is scheduled for completion by 2028 and aims to strengthen connectivity between Jurong West and Tengah town.
Measuring 10 meters in length and 5 meters in width, the bridge will cater to both pedestrians and cyclists. This initiative is part of a pilot scheme to investigate how 3D concrete printing can boost productivity in Singapore's construction sector, which faces a shortage of labour. Collaborators on the project include Nanyang Technological University, engineering firm Witteveen+Bos, and construction company CES_Innovfab.
The 3D concrete printing technique employs automated systems where concrete is meticulously layered through a nozzle, eliminating the need for traditional molds. This innovative method minimizes reliance on manual labour and temporary constructions, while also allowing for more intricate and flexible architectural designs compared to standard practices.
The authorities have successfully conducted structural tests on a scaled model using heavy load simulations. If these tests satisfy safety regulations, full-scale bridge construction will commence, with additional testing before public access is granted. Officials believe that this project will provide insight into the long-term viability of 3D printing technologies in infrastructure development.
