Tokyo: On Tuesday, one of Narita Airport’s two runways was closed after an American cargo plane made an emergency landing due to a hydraulic system issue. The Atlas Air Boeing 747, bound for Los Angeles, had to return to Narita shortly after takeoff when the problem was detected around 1:10 a.m. local time (1610 GMT), according to a transport ministry spokesperson.
The emergency landing resulted in ruptured tires and damaged wheels, but all seven crew members aboard were unharmed. The incident prompted a closure of Runway A for approximately seven hours. Airport officials reported that the runway was expected to reopen at 8:30 a.m. following tire replacement, and the disruption to other flights was minimal.

This incident follows another runway closure at Narita on Monday due to a brake malfunction on a Singapore Airlines flight. Emergency services were dispatched after smoke was reported from the plane. Fortunately, no fire was found, and no injuries were reported. The Singapore Airlines flight, which had experienced a brake issue upon landing, led to the temporary closure of Runway B for just under an hour.
Details on the specific mechanical problem with the Atlas Air plane were not immediately available.
