Israel, Hamas Restart Qatar Ceasefire Talks Amid Gaza Strikes and Aid Blockade

Israel and Hamas have started talking again in Qatar to try and stop the fighting, both sides confirmed on Saturday. But at the same time, Israel kept bombing Gaza, killing many people in the last three days. The country is also preparing to send more soldiers into Gaza in a large ground attack.

A spokesman for Hamas, Taher Al-Nono, told Reuters that the new talks in Doha began without any pre-conditions. He said Hamas asked for the fighting to end, for both sides to exchange prisoners, for Israeli troops to leave Gaza, and for aid and supplies to be allowed into the area.

Israel's Defence Minister, Israel Katz, also said talks had restarted about freeing Israeli hostages held by Hamas. However, he said Israel did not agree to stop fighting or to open the borders before the talks began.

Israel has stopped all supplies from entering Gaza since early March. Now, the country is starting a new mission called "Operation Gideon's Chariots" to take control of more areas in Gaza. This comes just after a visit from US President Donald Trump to the region.

People Face Starvation

Since March, no peace deal has been reached. Hamas says it won’t release hostages until Israel ends its attacks. Israel says it won’t stop until Hamas is completely defeated.

At a meeting of Arab leaders, Egypt’s President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi said Israel’s actions were meant to destroy the people of Gaza and wipe them out.

Experts from the United Nations now warn that famine is near in Gaza. UN aid chief Tom Fletcher asked the Security Council this week to step in to stop what he called “genocide.”

Israel blames Hamas for hiding among civilians and taking control of aid, which Hamas denies. Israel also said that during a six-week ceasefire earlier this year, enough food got into Gaza to avoid famine for the time being.

The future remains uncertain as talks continue and the suffering in Gaza grows.
