India and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have marked a significant advancement in their bilateral relations with several landmark agreements. They aim to elevate their trade volume to $200 billion by the year 2032.
During a recent meeting in New Delhi, UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi deliberated on enhancing collaboration in trade, energy, defense, and emerging technologies. Their discussions highlight the robust strategic alliance developed over the past decade.
The trade relationship between India and the UAE has seen rapid growth in recent years. A Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement, signed in February 2022, has facilitated this surge by lowering tariffs and broadening market access for various goods and services. Trade has already surpassed the $100 billion mark since this agreement.
As part of the latest agreements, India plans to import 0.5 million metric tons of liquefied natural gas annually from the UAE starting in 2028 for a decade. A letter of intent concerning a strategic defense partnership is also set to be finalized soon.
Additionally, the two nations will cooperate in the fields of space and agriculture. The UAE has committed to investing in a specialized development zone in Gujarat, India, which will feature advanced infrastructure, including airports, ports, and smart urban areas.
Experts regard this meeting as pivotal amid various tensions in West Asia involving Iran, Yemen, and Gaza. The strengthening of the India-UAE partnership signals their resolve to support each other during complex regional issues.
“The relationship between India and the UAE is strong and continuously evolving. Given the challenges in West Asia, now is a crucial time for both nations to collaborate for stability,” remarked Harsh Pant, Vice President of Foreign Policy at a New Delhi think tank.
India's extensive economic and community ties across West Asia reinforce its proactive engagement with key regional players, including the UAE, navigating a complex political landscape.
