Germany is rapidly becoming a hotspot for artificial intelligence investment as tech giants Google and Nvidia unveil ambitious expansion plans. The projects aim to strengthen the country’s digital infrastructure and support industrial transformation across Europe.
Google announced it will build a new data centre in Hesse and expand an existing one, boosting computing power for AI applications. The company also plans to enlarge its offices in Berlin, Frankfurt, and Munich while launching projects to cut greenhouse gas emissions, including using excess data centre heat to warm local homes. These investments are expected to support roughly 9,000 jobs annually.
Nvidia, meanwhile, is investing €1 billion to create a computing hub in Munich. The facility is designed to provide European companies—ranging from industrial leaders to start-ups—enhanced access to AI technologies. Together, these projects signal Germany’s push to close the gap with AI leaders like the US and China.
Germany’s digital infrastructure is rapidly expanding. Data centre capacity in the country is projected to rise 70% by 2030, yet Europe still trails the US and China in overall computing power. Despite this, local authorities emphasize that partnerships with US tech firms will not compromise data sovereignty, highlighting that agreements can ensure sensitive data remains under European control.
The twin investments underline Germany’s determination to attract foreign capital and modernize its digital sector. While questions remain about reliance on foreign tech, the move is seen as a crucial step for Europe to strengthen its AI capabilities and economic resilience.
