Massive protests swept across Mexico on Saturday as thousands of young demonstrators, rallying under the banner of “Generation Z,” took to the streets to denounce the country’s growing violence, corruption, and insecurity. The nationwide unrest was sparked by the shocking public killing of Uruapan Mayor Carlos Manzo earlier this month—an event that has reignited public anger over rising crime.
In Mexico City, tensions escalated quickly when a small group of hooded protesters tore down metal barricades surrounding the National Palace, where President Claudia Sheinbaum resides. Riot police responded with tear gas, leading to intense clashes in the historic city center.
Mexico City’s public safety secretary Pablo Vazquez announced during a press conference that 100 police officers were injured, with 40 requiring hospital treatment. He also confirmed that 20 civilians were injured in the confrontations, and authorities arrested 20 individuals, while another 20 were cited for administrative offenses.
The protests were not limited to the capital. Demonstrations unfolded in several major cities, including Michoacán, where public outrage remains high following the November 1 killing of Mayor Carlos Manzo, who was shot dead during a Day of the Dead public event. In Uruapan and nearby towns, protesters demanded stronger government action and chanted powerful slogans such as “Carlos did not die, the government killed him.”
In Mexico City, frustration was sharply directed at President Sheinbaum’s ruling party, Morena. Protesters shouted “Out, Morena” as they marched through the streets, calling for accountability and systemic reforms.
A collective identifying itself as “Generation Z Mexico” organized the demonstrations. In a widely shared “manifesto,” the group described itself as non-partisan and representing young Mexicans disillusioned by violence, abuse of power, and a perceived lack of government response. While “Generation Z” typically refers to those born between 1997 and 2012, the label has been globally adopted by various youth-led protest movements advocating political and social change.
However, Sheinbaum’s administration questioned the authenticity and motives behind the marches, alleging that right-leaning political opponents and social media bots played a significant role in amplifying the movement.
Saturday’s protests highlight the deepening frustration among Mexico’s younger generation, who are increasingly vocal about the nation’s escalating violence and the government’s struggle to restore public safety. With emotions running high and calls for reform growing louder, the demonstrations mark yet another flashpoint in Mexico’s ongoing battle against crime and corruption.
As investigations continue and political tensions rise, the impact of Generation Z’s awakening could shape Mexico’s social and political landscape in the months ahead.
