The Detroit Red Wings earned an important 2-1 victory over the New York Rangers on Sunday night in New York. The match was close from start to finish, but it was Lucas Raymond who helped Detroit break the tie late in the third period. His goal with less than four minutes left gave the Red Wings a much-needed win, especially after losing a three-goal lead the previous night against Buffalo.
Lucas Raymond had one of the strongest performances of the night. On Saturday, he collected three assists in the loss to the Sabres. On Sunday, he added a goal and an assist, becoming the key difference-maker for Detroit. His late goal helped the Red Wings end a seven-game losing streak to the Rangers, a team they had not beaten in a long time.
Raymond’s winning goal came after the Rangers lost control of the puck near the neutral zone. Alexis Lafreniere lost the puck, and Detroit defenseman Moritz Seider quickly took advantage. Seider passed the puck to captain Dylan Larkin, who moved it to Raymond as the Red Wings entered the offensive zone.
Raymond then made a brilliant individual effort. He skated down the left side, moved past New York defenseman Carson Soucy, circled behind the net, and faked a shot near the right circle. After creating space, he moved into the center and lifted the puck over Rangers goalie Jonathan Quick, who was stretched out across the crease.
Even though the Red Wings won, Rangers goaltender Jonathan Quick was one of the biggest stories of the game. He made 40 saves, including several difficult stops during Detroit’s five power-play opportunities. Quick stopped Dylan Larkin and Patrick Kane seven times each, and he shut down six shots from Raymond before finally giving up the deciding goal.
Quick kept the Rangers in the game for most of the night. Detroit had many chances, but Quick repeatedly blocked shots, including a sprawling save on Raymond with about eight minutes left in the third period. Without his efforts, the Rangers would have fallen behind much earlier.
The Red Wings finally got on the scoreboard after Quick stopped the first 19 shots of the game. The breakthrough came during a hooking penalty on New York rookie Noah Laba. Raymond’s initial shot from the right circle was saved, but the puck slipped behind Quick. Alex DeBrincat reacted quickly and tapped the loose puck into the open side of the net with ten and a half minutes left in the second period.
The Rangers quickly responded with a power-play goal of their own. During a delay-of-game penalty on Detroit’s Moritz Seider, New York tied the game. Artemi Panarin fired a shot from the slot that bounced off Will Cuylle. Cuylle pushed the puck toward Mika Zibanejad, who skated past Detroit rookie Marco Kasper and lifted the rebound into the right side of the net. This tied the game at 1-1 with just over eight minutes left in the second period.
Detroit goaltender Cam Talbot, playing against his original team, made 18 saves. While he did not face as many shots as Quick, he made important stops that prevented the Rangers from taking control. His calm play in the final minutes helped Detroit hold on to the one-goal lead after Raymond’s late winner.
The victory was an important boost for the Red Wings. After losing the previous night and blowing a big lead, the team needed a strong response. With Raymond leading the way, and with steady performances from Larkin, DeBrincat, Seider, and Talbot, Detroit earned a confident and well-deserved win.
