The Montreal Canadiens suffered another big setback as forward Kirby Dach will miss four to six weeks after fracturing his foot. The injury happened during Montreal’s 3-2 loss to the Boston Bruins on Saturday. The team confirmed the news on Sunday, adding another name to what has become a long list of injured players this season.
Dach left the game early after showing signs of discomfort, and tests later revealed the fracture. The 24-year-old forward had been playing an important role for the Canadiens, and his absence now leaves a noticeable gap in their lineup.
The Canadiens have struggled all season with major injuries to key players. Dach’s foot fracture makes things even more difficult for a team already dealing with several long-term absences.
Alex Newhook is out four months after suffering an ankle injury.
Patrik Laine, who recently underwent core muscle surgery, is expected to miss three to four months.
Kaiden Guhle, an important defenseman, is out eight to ten weeks with an adductor muscle injury.
This wave of injuries has forced the Canadiens to constantly adjust their lines, reshuffle roles, and rely more heavily on young players from their development system. Losing Dach now only adds to the team’s growing challenges.
Before the injury, Dach had been contributing well. He recorded seven points—five goals and two assists—across his first 15 games of the season. His scoring, speed, and physical presence made him a reliable forward in Montreal’s system.
At just 24 years old, Dach continues to show promise and development. Unfortunately, injuries have become a recurring problem in his career, slowing down what might have been even stronger progress.
With Dach out for several weeks, the Canadiens moved quickly to fill his spot. The team recalled Joshua Roy, a 22-year-old forward from the Laval Rocket in the American Hockey League (AHL). Roy has been performing well in the AHL and is seen as a promising young talent who can bring energy and scoring ability.
Although Roy is still developing, this opportunity gives him a chance to gain more NHL experience and help the Canadiens handle the pressure caused by so many injuries.
Kirby Dach has appeared in 284 career NHL games, scoring 128 points—48 goals and 80 assists. He began his career with the Chicago Blackhawks, who drafted him third overall in the 2019 NHL Draft. Dach later joined the Canadiens, where he has shown improvement despite facing many setbacks.
Unfortunately, his career has been heavily impacted by injuries. Over the past three regular seasons, Dach missed 129 games due to various issues. This latest injury adds to a history that has repeatedly slowed his momentum.
Dach’s four-to-six-week absence puts even more pressure on Montreal’s already thin lineup. The Canadiens must now rely on young players, depth forwards, and quick adjustments to stay competitive.
Coaches may need to change line combinations frequently to find the right balance. With more than one major player out long-term, the Canadiens face a tough road ahead. However, opportunities like these allow new players—such as Joshua Roy—to step in and prove themselves.
As for Dach, the hope is that he recovers fully and avoids further setbacks. His skills and potential remain valuable for Montreal’s long-term plans.
