More than 70 schools across Australia and New Zealand were temporarily closed on Monday as authorities conducted urgent cleaning and safety checks after traces of asbestos were discovered in widely used children’s play sand products. The closures affected both schools and preschools, raising alarm among parents, teachers, and local communities.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) issued a national recall notice on Wednesday for a number of colorful play sand products supplied by Educational Colours. Laboratory testing revealed the presence of tremolite and chrysotile asbestos — hazardous substances known to cause serious health risks, including lung disease and cancer, when inhaled.

The closures began on Friday in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) and included one school in Brisbane, but by Monday, more than 70 institutions had been impacted. Authorities emphasized that the action was preventive, aimed at ensuring children were not exposed to any potential danger.

“Safety is our top priority. We are working closely with schools, suppliers, and health authorities to ensure that all affected products are removed and that school facilities are thoroughly cleaned,” said an ACCC spokesperson.

Parents and educators expressed deep concern over the discovery, with many calling for stronger oversight of children’s products. Social media platforms have been flooded with messages warning families to check their homes for potentially contaminated play sand purchased in recent months.

The affected products, primarily marketed for preschool and early primary school play, have prompted recalls across retail chains in both countries. Health authorities have urged anyone who has purchased the recalled items to stop using them immediately and follow instructions for safe disposal.

While no cases of asbestos-related illness have been reported in connection with the play sand, experts caution that exposure can have long-term health consequences, particularly for children who are most vulnerable.

The ACCC continues to monitor the situation and is coordinating with state and territory authorities to ensure that all schools are safe before reopening. Officials have also urged retailers to assist in the recall process and ensure that any remaining stock is removed from circulation.

This incident underscores the importance of rigorous product testing and quality control, especially for items intended for children. Authorities have reiterated that they are taking every possible step to protect the health and safety of students while investigations continue.
