High heels are often seen as a stylish choice for parties, offices, and special events. But according to a Maryland-based physician, these fashionable shoes may slowly change the body in ways many people do not realise. Dr. Kunal Sood, an anaesthesiologist and interventional pain medicine specialist, shared in a recent post that long-term use of high heels can affect tendons, joints, and even increase the risk of knee arthritis.

Dr. Sood explains that high heels alter the natural alignment of the body. When the foot stays in a pointed position for many years, the Achilles tendon and calf muscles begin to shorten. This can make them tight, stiff, and less flexible. As a result, ankle movement decreases, and wearing flat shoes may start to feel uncomfortable. These changes also raise the risk of tendon strain or injury.

One of the biggest concerns Dr. Sood highlights is the impact on knee joints. He says that heels push the body’s weight forward, putting extra pressure on the inner part of the knee. Over time, this uneven pressure can speed up wear and tear of the cartilage. This may raise the chances of developing knee osteoarthritis, a condition that causes pain, stiffness, and difficulty moving.

High heels also change the way a person walks. Shorter steps, limited ankle movement, and different muscle use become common. Dr. Sood notes that these changes in walking style can stay with a person even after they stop wearing heels. The body adjusts to years of altered movement, creating lasting effects.

He summarises the issue by saying that wearing tight, high heels for years does more than affect the feet. It changes tendons, joints, and walking patterns in ways that may remain long after a person stops using them. While heels may look elegant, frequent use can lead to long-term physical stress.

Doctors recommend choosing comfortable, supportive footwear for daily use and limiting the time spent in high heels. Stretching the calf muscles and giving the feet rest can also help reduce the strain.
