Gallbladder stones, also called gallstones, are hard deposits that form in the gallbladder. They can cause pain and discomfort, and they are more common in pregnant and postpartum women due to changes in hormones and body function. Understanding why they form and how to prevent them is very important for mothers’ health.
Why Gallbladder Stones Form
During pregnancy, the body produces more estrogen and progesterone. These hormones can make bile thicker, which may lead to the formation of stones. Progesterone also relaxes muscles in the body, including the gallbladder, slowing the emptying of bile and increasing the risk of stones.
Other factors include:
Weight gain during pregnancy
High-fat diet or irregular meals
Family history of gallstones
Being over 30 years old
Gallstones can also form after delivery because hormone levels stay high for some weeks postpartum.
Symptoms of Gallbladder Stones
Gallstones may not always show symptoms, but when they do, women may experience:
Pain in the upper right abdomen, often after meals
Nausea or vomiting
Bloating or indigestion
Fever or chills if infection occurs
Sometimes, these symptoms can be confused with normal pregnancy discomforts. Consulting a doctor is important if pain is strong or persistent.
How to Prevent Gallstones
Women can reduce the risk of gallstones with some simple steps:
Eat small, frequent meals to keep the gallbladder active.
Include fiber in your diet: fruits, vegetables, and whole grains help digestion.
Avoid high-fat and fried foods, which increase stone risk.
Stay active: light exercises like walking improve digestion.
Maintain healthy weight gain during pregnancy.
Treatment and Care
If gallstones cause severe pain or complications, doctors may suggest medication or, rarely, surgery. Most mild cases can be managed with diet changes and careful monitoring.
Gallbladder stones are common during pregnancy and postpartum due to hormonal changes and slower bile flow. By eating healthy, staying active, and noticing warning signs, women can reduce risk. Early care ensures the mother and baby remain safe and healthy.
