A surge of norovirus cases has emerged at a senior high school in Foshan city, found in southern China’s Guangdong Province, with 103 students reported ill, as confirmed by local health officials on Saturday. All affected students are reported to be stable, with no severe or fatal cases noted thus far.
The impacted students, enrolled at Xinghui Middle School, exhibited symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea in recent days. Initial medical assessments have indicated the illness is due to norovirus, a highly contagious virus known for causing acute gastroenteritis.
In response to these reported cases, school administration promptly activated prevention and control protocols. The entire campus has undergone thorough disinfection, and rigorous health monitoring is currently in place. Daily attendance checks are being performed to ensure new cases are detected swiftly. Students displaying symptoms are being monitored closely and receiving necessary medical treatment.
An epidemiological probe is now in progress to track the infection's origin and evaluate potential risks of further transmission. Health authorities are investigating the modes of virus spread within the school, examining potential contaminated food, water sources, or close contact instances.
According to disease control officials in Guangdong, the province usually enters its annual norovirus epidemic season from October through March, a time when outbreaks are more probable, especially in packed settings like schools, dormitories, and childcare centers.
Norovirus stands out as one of the leading triggers of acute gastroenteritis globally. It spreads swiftly through direct contact, tainted food or water, and contact with contaminated surfaces. Although the illness often resolves independently, it can disseminate rapidly if proper hygiene practices are neglected.
Health officials have urged schools, parents, and students to exercise caution during this peak season by adhering to good hygiene practices, ensuring appropriate sanitation, and reporting symptoms promptly to curb any further spread.
