The Florida Gators claimed an impressive 82-68 win over the Miami Hurricanes, giving Miami their first loss of the season in the Jacksonville Hoops Showdown in Jacksonville, Florida. This match was expected to be a competitive battle between two strong teams, and Florida lived up to the challenge with a powerful performance on both offense and defense. The win brought the Gators to a 3-1 record, while Miami also dropped to 3-1 after the defeat.
Alex Condon played a major role in Florida’s win. He scored 19 points and collected seven rebounds before fouling out with just over five minutes left in the second half. Condon shot efficiently, making 8 of his 12 attempts, including two three-pointers. His strong scoring and energy helped Florida take control of the game at key moments. He also provided important inside presence, which made it harder for Miami to defend.
Thomas Haugh had one of his best games of the season, finishing with 17 points, eight rebounds, and three assists. His three-point shooting was especially helpful, giving Florida momentum at important times. Rueben Chinyelu also made a big impact with 16 points and 12 rebounds, earning a double-double. Despite fouling out with six minutes left, his dominance in the paint helped Florida build a comfortable lead earlier in the game. Urban Klavzar added 15 points, and his 4-for-7 shooting from long range helped stretch the floor.
For Miami, Malik Reneau was the standout player. A former Florida recruit, Reneau scored 22 points and grabbed 11 rebounds before fouling out in the second half. He worked hard inside the paint and kept Miami in the game during the first half. Tru Washington scored 16 points, while Trey Donaldson contributed 11 points, four rebounds, and six assists. However, Miami struggled at the free-throw line, shooting only 56 percent, which made it difficult for them to stay close.
The Hurricanes started the game strong, scoring first through a layup from Washington. But Florida quickly took the lead when Condon hit a three-pointer that sparked a 9-0 run. Boogie Fland ended the run with a smooth bank shot, giving Florida early momentum. Miami answered back with five straight successful shots, including a three-pointer from Donaldson, helping them take a 13-12 lead.
The first half continued with both teams exchanging baskets. Florida moved ahead again with three made free throws by Klavzar. Condon's putback gave Florida a 26-21 lead with six minutes left in the half. Miami tried to respond, but Haugh’s deep three-pointer pushed the lead further. Florida led 39-29 at halftime with Condon leading all scorers at 15 points.
Miami opened the second half with strong energy and went on a 7-0 run, reducing Florida’s lead to 44-41. Washington’s layups during this stretch gave Miami hope of a comeback. But Florida responded with better ball movement and stronger defense. Although both Chinyelu and Condon were in foul trouble early in the second half, Florida continued to score. Haugh’s three-point play and another long-distance shot helped the Gators increase their lead to 67-50 with less than eight minutes remaining.
From there, Florida maintained control. Miami struggled to score consistently, and the Gators used smart play and teamwork to close out the match. By the final whistle, Florida had earned a well-deserved win, showing balance, strength, and determination.
