The DP World Tour Championship ended on Sunday at Jumeirah Golf Estates in Dubai, bringing together the top 50 golfers from the Race to Dubai standings. The final day was filled with excitement, close competition, and a dramatic finish that kept fans watching until the last shot. The event marked the end of the 2025 season and celebrated the achievements of some of the best golfers in the world.
H.H. Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Sports Council, awarded the championship trophy to England’s Matt Fitzpatrick. This victory is Fitzpatrick’s third DP World Tour Championship win, following his previous titles in 2016 and 2020. The win is especially meaningful because it came after a challenging season in which Fitzpatrick struggled early but fought back strongly in the second half. During the final round, he played with great confidence and did not make a single mistake. His score of 66 helped him reach 18 under par, putting strong pressure on his closest competitor, Rory McIlroy, and setting up an exciting finish.
The end of the tournament brought a dramatic moment when Rory McIlroy made an impressive eagle on the final hole, tying the score and forcing a playoff. Fans were thrilled to see the two top players competing head-to-head for the title. But in the first playoff hole, McIlroy’s tee shot went into a penalty area, giving Fitzpatrick a chance to stay calm and secure the win. Fitzpatrick completed a steady par, which was enough to earn his third DP World Tour Championship trophy. The victory was emotional and meaningful for him, especially after a year filled with ups and downs.
Even though he missed out on winning the championship, Rory McIlroy still achieved an important milestone. He won the Race to Dubai title for the seventh time and the fourth year in a row. This puts him just one win behind Colin Montgomerie, who holds the record with eight titles. McIlroy said he felt pleased with his performance overall. He explained that even though he narrowly missed the top spot in the tournament, he was proud of his strong and consistent season. Winning the Race to Dubai again, he said, was the result of hard work and steady play in tournaments throughout the year.
Other golfers also delivered strong performances. Tommy Fleetwood, Ludvig Åberg, Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen, and Laurie Canter all tied for third place at 17 under par. Their close scores showed the high level of competition in this year’s event. Over four days, fans saw intense and skilled play from athletes representing different countries, each giving their best effort on the challenging course.
After his win, Matt Fitzpatrick spoke about how special this victory was. He said that he played one of his best rounds of the year and that he was proud of his performance under pressure. He also thanked his family, friends, and training staff for supporting him through difficult moments during the season. Ending the year with such a big win, he said, felt very rewarding and motivating.
Rory McIlroy also shared his thoughts. He said he had a great week and felt good about his overall game. Even though he wanted to win the final event, he was very happy to take home the Race to Dubai title once again. He explained that the award means a lot because it shows consistency across the entire season and recognises the hard work he puts in throughout the year.
With the 2025 DP World Tour Championship now complete, excitement is already building for the 2026 edition. Fans are encouraged to register early for tickets on the event’s official website. Next year’s championship is expected to bring more intense competition, more international players, and another thrilling finish in Dubai.
