Sony Pictures has reportedly closed a deal to develop a movie based on the viral Labubus toys, the media outlet reported this week. The project is in its early stages, and it has not yet been determined whether the film will be live-action or animated. Sony Pictures has declined to comment on the deal.
Labubus, created and sold by China’s Pop Mart, became a global phenomenon in 2025. The collectible dolls, sold in “blind boxes” that keep the exact model a surprise until opened, quickly captured the attention of fans worldwide. Celebrities such as Rihanna and Lisa from South Korea’s hit girl group Blackpink have been seen showcasing the toys, further fueling the craze.
The franchise’s popularity has made Labubus a cultural phenomenon, sparking long lines at stores and high demand among collectors. The toys’ quirky, toothy monster designs and the thrill of unboxing rare editions have contributed to their meteoric rise in popularity.
Sony Pictures, which previously produced the blockbuster Jumanji films as well as the animated Netflix hit KPop Demon Hunters, is now looking to translate the Labubus craze into a cinematic experience. Industry insiders suggest that the movie could potentially blend adventure, comedy, and fantasy elements, tapping into the playful and collectible nature of the toys.
While the development is in its nascent stages, fans are already speculating about potential storylines, character adaptations, and whether the film could kick off a larger franchise. With the global fanbase of both the toys and celebrity endorsements, Sony seems poised to bring Labubus from collectibles to the big screen.
