The European Union has reaffirmed its strong support for Ukraine amid ongoing tensions with Russia. On Friday, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that Ukraine can continue to rely on the EU as it faces aggression from Russia. She emphasized that the conflict is not just an attack on Ukraine, but also a challenge to the principles of the United Nations Charter.
Von der Leyen made the remarks during a speech in Johannesburg, South Africa, where she is attending the G20 summit. She highlighted that sanctions imposed on Russia are impacting its economy and sending a clear message that aggressive actions against sovereign nations will not be tolerated.
The European Union has maintained sanctions against Russia since its invasion of Ukraine, targeting key sectors such as energy, finance, and exports. These measures aim to pressure Russia to halt its military actions while supporting Ukraine’s defense and recovery.
The EU Commission President’s statement underscores the bloc’s ongoing commitment to Ukraine. She reassured that the European Union will continue providing financial aid, military support, and diplomatic backing to help Ukraine withstand the attacks.
Von der Leyen’s comments come as world leaders gather at the G20 summit to discuss global economic and security challenges. The situation in Ukraine remains a central topic, with many nations condemning the aggression and pledging support for the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
By reiterating its support, the European Union seeks to strengthen Ukraine’s position and encourage international cooperation to uphold international law and peace.
