Neil French, one of the most influential and creative minds in global advertising, has passed away at the age of 81 in Majorca. French, a British-born advertising visionary, left an indelible mark on the industry, particularly in Asia, where his work transformed the creative landscape.
Throughout his illustrious career, French was associated with several leading agencies, including Ogilvy & Mather and WPP. Known for his bold ideas and unconventional approach, he created memorable campaigns for iconic brands such as Chivas Regal, Kaminomoto Hair Tonic, and the famously fictitious XO Beer. The XO Beer campaign was so convincingly executed that bar-goers actually attempted to order it, demonstrating French’s knack for blending creativity with consumer engagement.
French’s influence stretched across Singapore, Hong Kong, and Thailand. He was instrumental in shaping the region’s advertising culture, pushing boundaries, and elevating Asian advertising onto the global stage. His campaigns were not just marketing exercises—they were cultural touchstones that inspired creativity across the industry.
His contributions were widely recognized with numerous prestigious awards. French was the recipient of the Clio Lifetime Achievement Award, inducted into the AWARD Hall of Fame, honored with the New York Festivals Lifetime Achievement Award, and presented with the Lotus Legend Award at ADFEST.
Colleagues and contemporaries remember French as a daring, fearless creative thinker whose insights often challenged conventional wisdom. He was celebrated not only for his campaigns but also for mentoring a generation of creative professionals, instilling in them a sense of risk-taking and originality.
French’s legacy continues to influence the advertising world, with his work serving as a benchmark for creativity, innovation, and cultural resonance. His passing marks the end of an era, but his ideas and vision will continue to inspire creatives worldwide.
