Iraq’s national football team is readying itself for the upcoming World Cup playoffs after being drawn to face the winner of a match between Bolivia and Suriname. The former Asian champions secured their spot in the intercontinental playoffs by defeating the United Arab Emirates with a 3-2 aggregate score, following a 2-1 victory in Basra on Tuesday.
Head coach Graham Arnold, who took over from Jesus Casas in June, stressed the importance of maintaining a positive mindset as Iraq prepares for the high-pressure matches. “We have to stay positive and make sure we get prepared for this game,” Arnold said. The coach highlighted that off-field preparation will be key, especially since the playoffs will be played in Mexico, a location unfamiliar to the team.
Iraq’s previous experience at the World Cup dates back to 1986, when the team made its only appearance in the finals held in Mexico. That historical connection adds extra motivation for the players and coaching staff as they aim to return to football’s biggest stage after decades.
Bolivia, which finished seventh in South American qualifying, will play against Suriname to determine who will face Iraq in the playoff match. The specific dates and venues for these matches have not yet been confirmed by FIFA, but preparations are already underway for both teams. Arnold emphasized that analyzing opponents and understanding the unique challenges of playing in Mexico will be essential for Iraq’s success.
The coach brings a wealth of experience in guiding teams through crucial playoff matches. Arnold previously led Australia to the 2022 World Cup, securing qualification through decisive wins over the UAE and Peru. His experience in navigating intense, high-stakes encounters is expected to be a valuable asset for Iraq as they aim to reach their second-ever World Cup.
Iraq’s players have responded positively to Arnold’s leadership, focusing on physical fitness, tactical training, and mental readiness. The team recognizes the importance of resilience, discipline, and teamwork as they face potentially tough opponents from South America or the Caribbean.
The World Cup 2026 will be a historic tournament, expanded to include 48 teams, providing additional opportunities for nations like Iraq to compete on the global stage. Participation in this expanded format could offer Iraqi football renewed international exposure, encouraging further development of the sport in the country.
Fans and officials alike are hopeful that Iraq can replicate the determination and skill shown in the UAE matches. The country’s successful performance in the fifth round of Asian qualifiers demonstrates the team’s capability to compete at high levels and maintain composure under pressure.
Arnold concluded, “We are focused, positive, and ready to face whoever comes our way. Our goal is to perform at our best, honor Iraqi football, and aim for a place at the World Cup. Every detail counts, and we are preparing fully for this opportunity.”
With strategic planning, experienced coaching, and motivated players, Iraq is set to make a strong attempt to return to the World Cup stage and compete among the world’s top footballing nations in 2026.
