The Emirates Villages Running Races, organised by the Emirates Council for Balanced Development, have achieved a major international milestone by receiving recognition from UN Tourism in the Social Impact in Sports Tourism category.

The award was presented during an official ceremony in Madrid, attended by senior global officials, including Shaikha Nasser Al Nowais, Secretary-General of UN Tourism, along with international experts. The honour highlights the initiative’s success in connecting sports with community development and sustainable tourism.

This recognition reflects the UAE’s growing leadership in creating innovative models that combine sports, tourism, and social development. It also strengthens the country’s position as a global hub for sustainable initiatives that deliver real societal impact.

Notably, the achievement comes within the first year of the initiative’s launch, making it a significant milestone. The Emirates Villages Running Races are now counted among globally recognised programmes promoting sports tourism and community engagement.

His Excellency Mohamed Al Kaabi, Secretary-General of the Emirates Council for Balanced Development, stated that the award aligns with the leadership’s vision of integrating community development with key sectors such as sports and tourism. He emphasised that such initiatives support balanced and sustainable growth, particularly in rural areas.

He further explained that the running races serve as an innovative national model aimed at improving quality of life, encouraging active lifestyles, and boosting local tourism across villages. The council plans to continue launching impactful initiatives that empower communities and showcase their tourism potential.

The race series, held between October and December 2025, included seven events across seven villages in different emirates. More than 5,000 participants took part, with UAE nationals making up 62 percent, alongside runners from over 50 nationalities.

Participants competed in race distances ranging from 1.5 km to 10 km, catering to various fitness levels. Each event offered a unique experience, taking place across diverse landscapes such as mountains, beaches, and heritage sites.

By blending sports with local culture, agriculture, and community experiences, the initiative has successfully positioned UAE villages as emerging tourism destinations.

Overall, the Emirates Villages Running Races stand out as a pioneering model that unites sports, tourism, and community development, with strong potential for expansion at both regional and global levels.
