Raphael Varane, the renowned French defender and World Cup champion, has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 31. This decision follows a significant knee injury he sustained shortly after joining Serie A club Como in July, where he suffered the setback on his debut.
Varane's illustrious international career spanned from 2013 to 2022, during which he earned 93 caps for the French national team. He played a pivotal role in France's triumph at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia and was instrumental in their runners-up finish at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Beginning his club career at Ligue 1's Lens, Varane made a move to Real Madrid in 2011. During his time with the Spanish giants, he made 360 appearances and garnered an impressive collection of honors, including three La Liga titles and four UEFA Champions League trophies. Varane joined Manchester United in 2021, where he went on to make 95 appearances in all competitions, helping the club secure the League Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024.
In an emotional farewell posted on Instagram, Varane reflected on his journey: “I have fallen and risen a thousand times, and this time, it’s the moment to stop and hang my boots up with my final game winning a trophy at Wembley,” referring to Manchester United's FA Cup victory in May. He expressed gratitude for his experiences, stating, "I have no regrets, I wouldn't change a thing. I have won more than I could have even dreamed of."
Beyond the accolades, Varane emphasized his commitment to his principles, stating that he always aimed to leave every club better than he found it. He announced that he would continue to be associated with Como in a non-playing capacity, indicating a new chapter in his life off the pitch. “A new life begins off the pitch. I will remain with Como. Just without using my boots and shin pads. Something I am looking forward to sharing more about soon,” he added.
Varane’s retirement marks the end of a remarkable career defined by success, resilience, and integrity, leaving behind a lasting legacy in the world of football.
