Europe: Leading global food company Nestlé has confirmed the theft of a massive shipment of its popular KitKat chocolate bars, raising concerns over potential shortages ahead of the busy Easter season.
According to an official statement, a truck carrying approximately 413,793 units of a new KitKat chocolate range was stolen during transit across Europe. The shipment, weighing nearly 12 tonnes, went missing last week while en route from central Italy to Poland, where it was scheduled for distribution across multiple European markets.
The company did not disclose the exact location of the theft but confirmed that both the vehicle and its cargo remain untraced. Authorities and supply chain partners are currently working closely with Nestlé to investigate the incident.
In a light-hearted remark referencing the brand’s famous slogan, a company spokesperson said the thieves appeared to have taken the idea of “taking a break” too far by making off with the entire shipment.
However, the impact of the incident could be serious for consumers. Nestlé warned that the theft may disrupt supply chains, potentially making it difficult for customers to find KitKat products on store shelves during the peak Easter shopping period.
The company also cautioned that the stolen chocolates could surface in unauthorised or unofficial sales channels across Europe. To combat this, each product carries a unique batch code that can be scanned to verify authenticity and alert the company if stolen stock is identified.
Nestlé has urged retailers and consumers to remain vigilant as investigations continue into one of the most unusual large-scale chocolate thefts in recent times.
