Dwayne Johnson has revealed that he attempted to secure a cameo in the highly anticipated sequel The Devil Wears Prada 2, hoping to appear alongside Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, and Emily Blunt. Johnson, who is currently receiving praise for his role in The Smashing Machine, shared the story while speaking about his growing interest in unexpected and unconventional roles.
Johnson’s connection to the project came through Emily Blunt, his co-star in The Smashing Machine, which chronicles the turbulent personal and professional life of MMA fighter Mark Kerr. During the time Blunt was filming The Devil Wears Prada 2, Johnson told her directly that he wanted to be part of the movie, despite the franchise’s strong ties to high fashion and editorial drama — a world far removed from his usual action-driven roles.
According to Johnson, he pitched himself enthusiastically for a small yet memorable character, someone confident, stylish, and deeply embedded in the fashion world. Blunt confirmed his effort, laughing as she said that “he tried” to get himself written into the film. Johnson described the role as one that required flair — including the ability to walk in heels. Joking about the requirement, he said the character needed to handle “size 15 heels,” a remark that prompted Blunt to playfully add that he actually looked good in them, calling him “hot” when wearing heels.
Despite his charm and willingness to embrace the challenge, Johnson ultimately did not land a part in the sequel. However, his interest in joining the film led Blunt to keep him closely connected to the production. While filming on the streets of New York City, she frequently sent him videos and behind-the-scenes glimpses from her car before stepping onto the set. Johnson recalled these moments fondly, saying that the environment around the shoot was intense, with swarms of fans gathering on the streets. He described the level of excitement as “pop star level,” noting how powerful the franchise’s fan following still is nearly two decades after the original film’s release.
The Devil Wears Prada 2 is directed by David Frankel, who also helmed the 2006 hit that became a cultural phenomenon. The sequel is based on Lauren Weisberger’s 2003 novel, which inspired the first film. The original movie premiered in June 2006 and remains beloved for its portrayal of the high-pressure fashion publishing world, largely driven by Meryl Streep’s iconic performance as Miranda Priestly and Anne Hathaway’s breakout role as Andy Sachs.
The upcoming sequel is set to continue the characters’ journeys in a modern context, addressing how the fashion industry has evolved in the age of social media, digital influence, and shifting workplace dynamics. As excitement builds, the film is scheduled to release on May 1, 2026, with the core cast reprising their celebrated roles, making it one of the most anticipated releases of the year.
