Wicked: For Good Smashes Records with $226M Global Opening Weekend

The sequel to the hit musical Wicked, titled Wicked: For Good, has exceeded box office expectations in its opening weekend. Starring Ariana Grande as Glinda and Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, the film was initially projected to earn $145 million in North America but soared past that, raking in $150 million domestically.

This marks a new record for a film adaptation of a Broadway musical, ranking as the third-best domestic opening weekend for a musical ever, just behind Disney’s The Lion King (2019) and Beauty and the Beast (2017). The original Wicked had earned $111 million in its opening weekend, meaning the sequel has comfortably surpassed it.

Internationally, Wicked: For Good added $76 million, bringing its global total to $226 million in just three days. This already makes it the 18th highest-grossing film of 2025, surpassing movies like Snow White, Joker: Folie à Deux, and One Battle After Another.

Based on the long-running Broadway musical and Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel, the film retells The Wizard of Oz story. In this sequel, Glinda and Elphaba, now the Wicked Witch of the West, face off against the evil schemes of The Wizard (Jeff Goldblum) and Madame Morrible (Michelle Yeoh).
